Intensity 3 Earthquake Felt in Baguio, La Trinidad

BAGUIO CITY, Sept. 20(PIA)-- Residents of Baguio City and parts of Benguet were awakened by a mild  jolt on Thursday morning, September 19.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) recorded a magnitude 3.0 earthquake at around 5:31AM . It was felt at Intensity 3 in Baguio City and La Trinidad. 

According to the PHIVOLCS Baguio OIC Salvador Cesario, the epicenter of the earthquake was located at 23 kilometers South  and 36 degrees West of La Trinidad, Benguet. The earthquake which was  of tectonic  origin   had a depth of 29 kilometer and  caused by the movement by the local fault in La Trinidad.

Cesario said that the small earth movement is just a normal movement of the grounds and it is better to have small movements which occur almost every day.

The Cordillera Regional Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council said that there were no reported damages due to the earth movement and no aftershocks were also felt.

Although the earthquake did not have damages, the CDRRMC reiterated that the public should always be aware and be prepared.


Its  reminders are: Drop down onto your hands and knees to protect you from falling but allows you to still move if necessary, cover your head and neck under a sturdy table or desk and hold on to your shelter or to your head and neck until the shaking stops. (JDP/RC-PIA CAR)
